1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device to remember information about your visit. Similar technologies — such as local storage, session storage, and pixels — work the same way for our purposes, and we'll refer to all of them as "cookies" in this policy.

Cookies are usually classified by how long they last (session cookies expire when you close the browser; persistent cookies stay until they expire or you clear them) and who sets them (first-party by the site you're visiting; third-party by another service embedded on the page).

2. What we use on this site

beyondafrica.org is a static informational website. We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-9KESLGWD2Q) to understand how visitors use the Site: pages viewed, approximate location, device type, and how you arrived. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (such as _ga and _ga_*) to distinguish visitors. We also use the TikTok Pixel and the Meta Pixel (Facebook/Instagram) to measure our advertising and build ad audiences on those platforms. How analytics and advertising load depends on where you are: outside the EU/UK/EEA they load on page load; in the EU/UK/EEA they load only if you accept our consent banner. You can opt out of advertising "sharing" at any time — regardless of region — on our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information page, and we honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signal. We do not sell this data for money. Beyond analytics and marketing tracking, the only data that touches our servers is the standard request log kept by our hosting provider (see our Privacy Policy for detail).

That said, our infrastructure provider (Vercel) may occasionally set strictly-necessary cookies for security, request routing, or abuse prevention. These are essential to operating the Site and cannot be meaningfully disabled without breaking the Site.

3. Local browser storage

Some forms on this site (for example, the student ticket form) may use your browser's localStorage to save your in-progress application draft so you can come back and resume. This data:

  • Stays on your device only — it is not transmitted to us until you submit;
  • May be stored under a per-form key (e.g. a student ticket draft);
  • Persists until you click "clear" on the application page, submit the form, or clear your browser data.

If you are on a shared or public computer, click "clear" before leaving, or use your browser's private/incognito mode to avoid leaving a draft behind.

4. Third-party services

When you click a link or interact with a service outside our site, that third party may set its own cookies under its own policy. The most common examples on BeyondAfrica:

  • Ticket Tailor (when you interact with a ticket button). Checkout opens as an overlay on our page, but it runs entirely inside a frame served by Ticket Tailor: they handle the whole purchase flow on their own domain and set cookies under their own policy. Their script is fetched from cdn.tickettailor.com only once you hover, tap or click a ticket button — not on page load. See the Ticket Tailor Privacy & Cookies Policy.
  • Google Apps Script (when you submit the student ticket form, the request goes to a Google Apps Script web app that writes to a Google Sheet and emails our applications inbox). Google may set cookies on the script.google.com domain under its own policy: Google's Cookie Policy.
  • Google Analytics (on every page). Google processes usage data on our behalf and sets cookies under its own policy: Google's Cookie Policy. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
  • Meta Pixel (Facebook/Instagram advertising) — loaded on page load outside the EU/UK/EEA, and only after consent inside the EU/UK/EEA. It loads fbevents.js from connect.facebook.net and sends events to facebook.com to measure our ads and build advertising audiences. See Meta's Privacy Policy. To limit this, opt out on our Do Not Sell or Share page, send Global Privacy Control, or use your browser's tracking controls or Meta's ad settings.
  • TikTok Pixel (TikTok advertising) — loaded on page load outside the EU/UK/EEA, and only after consent inside the EU/UK/EEA. It loads events.js from analytics.tiktok.com and sends events to TikTok to measure our ads and build advertising audiences. See TikTok's Privacy Policy. To limit this, opt out on our Do Not Sell or Share page, send Global Privacy Control, or use your browser's tracking controls or TikTok's ad settings.
  • Google Fonts (used by our site to render typography). Google Fonts loads CSS and font files from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com. According to Google, the Fonts API does not set cookies, but your IP address is logged briefly for performance reasons.

5. Analytics and marketing

We use Google Analytics 4, the TikTok Pixel, and the Meta Pixel for measurement and advertising. Whether these load before you make a choice depends on your region:

  • EU / UK / EEA visitors: analytics and advertising are off until you accept our consent banner (Accept / Decline). Declining leaves them off.
  • Everywhere else (e.g. the US): they load on page load, and our banner is an informational notice. You can still opt out of advertising "sharing" on our Do Not Sell or Share page, and we honor the Global Privacy Control signal.

We detect your region from your browser's time zone (a best-effort proxy; no third-party location lookup, and it errs toward asking for consent). If we add further marketing tools, we will update this Cookies Policy.

6. How to manage cookies

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to refuse all cookies, accept only first-party cookies, or be prompted before each cookie is set. Be aware that blocking strictly-necessary cookies may cause parts of this Site to stop working.

To clear local storage specifically (for any saved form draft), open your browser's developer tools, go to the Application or Storage panel, and remove the relevant key under beyondafrica.org.

7. Do Not Track

Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. Because there is no common industry standard for how to interpret DNT, we currently treat it as informational and do not change Site behavior based on it. However, we do honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal as an opt-out of advertising "sharing." You can also opt out yourself on our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information page, limit the Meta and TikTok pixels through your browser's tracking controls or each platform's ad settings, or clear this site's cookies and local storage.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Cookies Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects when the most recent change was made. If we add new categories of cookies (for example, analytics or marketing), we will update this page and request consent where required by law.
