Damola Adamolekun: The 35-Year-Old Nigerian CEO Leading Red Lobster's Comeback

BeyondAfrica Spotlight cover, Damola Adamolekun, CEO of Red Lobster

At 35, this Nigerian was handed one of America's most famous restaurant chains, in the middle of bankruptcy. His response: "We're going to execute the greatest comeback in restaurant history." Meet Damola Adamolekun.

From Nigeria to Springfield, Illinois

Born in Nigeria to a neurologist and a pharmacist, Damola lived in Zimbabwe and the Netherlands before landing in Springfield, Illinois, at age 9. In America, he did it all at once: played football at Brown University while landing a Goldman Sachs internship at just 19.

From Goldman to CEO of P.F. Chang's at 31

From Goldman he moved to private equity at TPG, then became a partner at the hedge fund Paulson & Co. At 31, he became CEO of P.F. Chang's, one of the youngest chief executives of a major American restaurant chain. Under him, the company grew to roughly $1 billion a year in revenue.

The hardest seat in American dining

Then in 2024, the call came. Red Lobster, an American icon with hundreds of restaurants and tens of thousands of employees, was in bankruptcy. Investors needed someone to bring it back from the dead. They chose the 35-year-old from Nigeria.

Within weeks of his arrival, Red Lobster was out of bankruptcy. Since then he has rebuilt the menu, brought back what customers loved, and is now betting big on making it, in his words, the most AI-forward restaurant company in existence. The comeback is not finished, but that is exactly the point: he chose the hardest seat in American dining, on purpose.

He's not the exception. He's the evidence.

A Nigerian is fighting to pull off the greatest comeback in restaurant history, and remember this: he is not the exception, he is the evidence. There are thousands of Damolas building Beyond Africa, and we want to tell the world about them. Meet them at the BeyondAfrica Conference in Austin, and join the newsletter for who we spotlight next.
